Walking

Walking is probably the simplest alternative to driving, especially for a short trip. You also get all the health benefits of exercise while commuting at a pace that allows you to experience the sights, sounds and smells that you would miss in a car. It's easy, inexpensive, invigorating and non-polluting. You don't have to fight traffic, look for a parking space or even pay for parking.

If your workplace seems too far to commute on foot, you can still take advantage of the benefits of walking in the following ways:
  • Walk to a bus stop, and take the LTD Bus.
  • Walk to a meeting point for your carpool or vanpool.
  • Once you get to work, walk to lunch, errands and meetings.

The City of Eugene Safe Routes to School Coordinator, Shane Rhodes, believes that all Eugene City school children who can walk or bike and who live within reasonable walking and biking distances from school should be able to get to school under their own power in safety, and with the perception of safety, and they should be encouraged and helped to do so in all ways possible.
